Project CK HOUSE | Location Kocaeli, Turkey | Date 2018 | Client Private | Status Concept | Size 100 m² | Team Nurşah Kaplan, Büşra Ahıskalı

Located in a site consisting of 156 residences, this residence has a view of the pond in the center of the site. The owners have been living there for more than 10 years and, knowing the shortcomings of the place, want to transform it into an innovative yet practical home in order to better meet the requirements of the space, without compromising their classic style. On the ground floor are the kitchen, living room, living room, study and WC, and the bedrooms are located on the upper floor. It is on the floor.

It was requested that the first floor of the house be projected.

Due to the effect of a different period in each room, a single period style has been tried to be captured in the general design of the house with the idea of reflecting the spirit of the users more strongly.

First of all, the WC section opening to the entrance hall was revised and arranged as a Clothing – Cloakroom Room. It was aimed to expand the narrow entrance area and to increase the storage area with the new room designed by removing the insufficient cloakroom cabinet. At the same time, for the dark entrance area, it was thought that the wall of the stairs would be broken and the area redefined with glass would be illuminated during the day with the light coming from the staircase glass. Finally, at the request of the employer, the use of a long bench has been suggested for the children to use it more comfortably when entering and leaving the house.

Since the inadequacy of the existing library causes the items to look untidy and scattered, the primary need for this area has been a library that can accommodate wide and different uses. By positioning the newly designed bookcase behind the desk, it is ensured that the light reaches the desk directly, and that the stored items and files are in an easily accessible area while working. The front of the study desk has been refreshed by the fact that most of the objects in the room can be collected in the library. Since the room is also used for reading books, a reading corner with an armchair-poof and floor lamp is also defined. Simple forms were preferred for all designed and used objects and furniture, taking into account the room scale. In addition, it is suggested to use blinds instead of long curtains that crowd the room.

According to the user’s request; Wenge color was preferred in the designed furniture, and light colors were used in the armchair upholstery and wall paint due to the dark color of the furniture. In order to disperse the contrast effect, it was deemed appropriate to use green plants and green color on the pouf flooring. Finally, the design has been completed with the antique brass details preferred in the handle and lighting, which are complementary elements.

When the users were asked “the object that best expresses themselves in the home”, they said that it was this desk with wenge curve surfaces and round legs in the study rooms, and a study was carried out to strengthen this style in the general design of the house.

The most important problem of the current room design is the furniture that is not suitable for the scale of the room and cannot adequately meet the needs of the user. Due to the fact that the existing dining table is large and its legs have wide and exaggerated details, a simpler form but with elegant gold details as desired was preferred for the new dining table.

It is aimed to ensure integrity by preserving the existing bevelled diamond-shaped mirror and meeting the same cross effect with gold details in the furniture to be used in the dining area (horizontal buffet, chair, dresser).

Due to the dark effect of wenge color, which is given priority in furniture designs at the request of the user, light colors are used in chair upholstery and wall paint. In order to make the space dynamic, the use of green plants was given importance.

Since the location of the existing lighting of the room is not specially determined for the dining table, sufficient lighting cannot be provided in the dining area. It is aimed to provide illumination for spatial needs with the preferred gold linear form chandeliers.

Upon the demands of the users regarding the room, an alternative living room design proposal was developed instead of the existing living room furniture. Instead of avant-garde furniture with exaggerated forms and details compared to the scale of the room, it is aimed to achieve the same visual saturation with furniture and floor coverings with a simple form, emphasizing only the metal gold skeleton.

Inspired by nature for the living room design, which is one of the living spaces of the house; In bench-seat coverings, the calming effect of green was used in curtain selection, and leaf patterns were preferred as wallpaper. In addition, the use of fur covers-upholstery has been suggested as an alternative to green seat upholstery.

In carpet and pillow patterns, patterns similar to the mirror form used in the rest of the room were sought.

Spatial setup is defined with the white marble coffee table in the center of the room, and the design is detailed with the linear gold skeleton of the coffee table and lighting elements.

The main idea that emerged for the kitchen design was ‘together in spatial fiction’, as the user was uncomfortable with the fact that he was spending time separately in the kitchen and his children in the living room at increasing times of the day, and that he wanted to spend time together in these increasing times.

The wall separating the kitchen and living room was removed and the original kitchen design was rethought. It is aimed to make the kitchen setup practical by minimizing the walking distance between the cooking-preparation-washing areas of the kitchen. In the kitchen area of the house, where a fast life is lived, the island and the dining table connected to it have been set up. Thus, the island between the kitchen and the dining area will be able to be used both as a kitchen counter and as a separator, the lower part of which serves as a storage.

The use of open shelves was suggested by evaluating the space between the bench and the cabinet above the bench. Taking advantage of the niche on the entrance wall where the radiator is located, a cover is designed to close the radiator in this area, and its top is designed as an open cupboard for glasses.

Natural marble with a light color is preferred for the flooring. It is suggested to use dark navy blue lacquer paint on cabinet doors and light marble patterned quartz surfaces on the counter.

Complementary items such as aspirator, door handles, and lighting elements are preferred to be in gold color in order to integrate with the other rooms of the house.

The L seat in the existing seating area alone cannot meet the needs of the users. The demand of the users is a spatial design in which a new seating unit can be included in this area. In this sense, the small size of the space is at a frequency that forces the design. As a result of different trials, the only way to meet this need is; is to replace the new seating unit with the existing TV area. However, in this case, the need for a new space to position the TV unit arises. As a solution to this emerging problem, the ‘Floor to Floor Ceiling Hanger’ was used between the living and the kitchen area, allowing the TV to be positioned without taking up space on the floor and to serve both the living area and the dining area functionally.

In the living area, the L seat, which is still in use, is preserved and a light colored double seat is suggested to be compatible with it. The use of a white marble center table, which is thought to harmonize with the kitchen in the designed area, is suggested.

In the flooring, natural marble with a light color was preferred, ensuring integrity with the kitchen.

Due to the narrowness of the space, the idea is presented that the existing plants can not be placed on the ground, but can be decorated with footed flowerpots.
